Motivation Monday – What’s holding you back?

Motivation Monday 9.28.15 – What’s holding you back?

Happy Monday friends! Before you kick yourself into high gear for this new workweek, I want to ask you a question. What’s holding you back? I know it may be too early in the week to go deep, but this question is a great way to take a personal inventory. The truth is, life is to short to live in bondage to anything. So… what’s holding you back?

There is a young man that we read about in the Bible in Matthew 19. He came to Jesus and asked how to get eternal life. He clearly had done well for himself financially since the Bible has him listed as the rich young ruler. After the conversation begins, we discover that he is following the commandments. And let’s get real, if he is asking Jesus about finding eternal life, he is headed in a pretty good direction! The problem is, good is the enemy of great. (I’m pretty sure someone smarter than me said that at some point.)

So Jesus challenges this guy with something big! He is Jesus, so He knew what was hindering this young man. His riches had consumed him. Having some money or some things is not always a bad thing, but in this guy’s case like many, his riches had him. So check out how they wrap this conversation up.

“The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” Matthew 19:20-22

To sum it Jesus said, if you want to move forward you have to first let go of what’s holding you back! The sad part is what verse 22 says. “He went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” Sometimes we focus so much on what we need to add to our life, but most of us get hung up because of the things that we need to let go of.

You don’t have to go away sorrowful, but you do need to reflect and identify what is holding you back. Then you need to refocus on what you should be focusing on, and then respond.

It’s time friend! Move courageously into your future without the baggage of yesterday. We will never be able to fully embrace tomorrow until we deal with our yesterdays.

Be encouraged and have a great week friend!
